Video games has been here entertaining us gamers for decades. Beginnings from a simple ball and paddle game in Pong to large scale battleroyal game in Fortnite. The video game industry has been around since the 1970s and over that time we, here at Game Nitwits, have our fair share of iconic gaming history moments. Here is a list of our iconic gaming history moments we came up with. This may contain some spoilers, but come on, some of these are decades old. You have been warned.
Important console/system in gaming history:
Atari 2600
The first commercial video game unit to hit homes. Believe it or not, this system was originally built with wood for the shell before they moved to plastic molding. The Atari 2600 started the movement for home gaming consoles.
Best “sleeper hit” in gaming history:
Beyond Good & Evil
Released November 11/03. A great storyline and gameplay, but was buried by the Christmas rush of big game releases, such as Mario Kart: Double Dash (GameCube), Final Fantasy X-2 (PS2), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Xbox) and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC). However the cult hit was not forgotten. During E3 2017, Ubisoft announced Beyond Good & Evil 2. This would be the prequel to the first game.
Iconic protagonist in gaming history:
Samus Aran
34 Year Old Spoiler: Why Samus Aran? Because under the original perception the Samus was a male character; along with some pretty cool weapons and abilities. But when you finish Metroid and see this character shed the armor, you realized the person under it all was a female; a pretty bad-ass female bounty hunter. Big shocker to all.
Most important game/franchise in gaming history:
Mortal Kombat
This game series really brought focus on video games, mainly due to the intense violence, blood and gore provided from “Fatalities”. Due to the nature of the intense adult nature of the game (mainly blood and gore, violence), the Entertainment Software Rating Board or “ESRB” rating system was formed to provide rating system on games same as on movies.
Best villain in gaming history:
Timers, Countdowns or Escape Sequences
Because nothing gets your heart pumping and stressed than:
- A countdown ticking while you are trying to complete a level. For example: any level in Super Mario Bros
- Working on an objective such as disarming planted bombs in: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Escaping the area before the bomb explodes in particular the end of every Metroid game
Doom (top)
Doom 3 (center)
Doom 2016 (bottom)
All-time best weapon or in-game character ability:
BFG 9000
Probably the most iconic weapon and weapon name in video game history.
BFG – “Big $#*! Gun”, “Big, Uh… Freakin’ Gun”, or the weirdest name: “Bio Force Gun”. But whatever you called it, just equipping the weapon made you feel badass. An unstoppable force to reckon with.
